Background: Psychological factors, alongside physical and chemical hazards, constitute significant occupational risks in healthcare environments. Occupational stress arises when there is a perceived imbalance between job demands and an individual's capabilities, resources, and needs. It manifests through physical, mental, and behavioral changes, including hypertension, myocardial infarction, anxiety, irritability, headache, physical fatigue, peptic ulcers, and insomnia. Healthcare professionals consistently report higher levels of occupational stress compared to workers in other fields.
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of auriculotherapy in reducing occupational stress among healthcare personnel in a teaching hospital in eastern Guilan, Iran.
Methods: This is a single-blind, parallel-group, sham-controlled randomized clinical trial conducted in accordance with the CONSORT and SPIRIT guidelines. A total of 92 eligible participants with moderate-to-severe or severe occupational stress (based on the Osipow Occupational Stress Inventory [OSI]) will be randomly assigned to either the intervention and control group. Auriculotherapy was administered weekly for six weeks at stress-related ear points (Shenmen, Brainstem) in the intervention group and at sham points in controls. Occupational stress will be assessed at baseline, after the third session, after the sixth session, and 15 days post-intervention. Changes over time and group differences were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models..
Discussion: This trial will provide evidence on the efficacy of auriculotherapy as a safe, low-cost, and non-pharmacological intervention for managing occupational stress in healthcare settings.
