Aims: Childhood asthma is a common chronic disease associated with caregivers’ psychological well-being and quality of life, particularly among mothers, who often serve as primary caregivers. This study aimed to examine parenting stress, quality of life, and their relationship among mothers of children with asthma in Iraq.
Instrument & Methods: This cross-sectional study included 250 mothers of children aged 5–15 years with physician-diagnosed asthma who attended two teaching hospitals in Baquba, Iraq, between February and October 2024. Data were collected using a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, the Parental Stress Scale, and the Pediatric Asthma Caregiver’s Quality of Life Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using independent-samples t tests, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation, and multiple linear regression.
Findings: The mean parenting stress score was 52.16±5.71, and the mean quality-of-life score was 4.61±1.10. Parenting stress was significantly and negatively correlated with overall quality of life (r=−0.346; p<0.001), emotional function (r=−0.311; p<0.001), and activity limitation (r=−0.366; p<0.001). In multivariable analyses, marital status, paternal educational level, and birth order were significant predictors of maternal quality of life, whereas marital status was the only significant predictor of parenting stress.
Conclusion: Parenting stress, maternal marital status, paternal education, and child birth order significantly predict the quality of life of Iraqi mothers of children with asthma.
