Aims: Suicide is a violent and social phenomenon that affects all societies in the world. The present study aimed to investigate the frequency of suicide attempts in patients referred to teaching hospitals affiliated with Yasuj University of Medical Sciences.
Instruments and Methods: The present study was a descriptive and retrospective study in which demographic and epidemiological information of suicide attempts that had been referred to medical centers affiliated with Yasuj University of Medical Sciences during the years 2019 to 2023 and were archived in the Yasuj City Health Center were extracted and, after being entered into SPSS software, analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Findings: Results showed that the prevalence of suicide in Yasuj city during the 5-year study period varied between 258 and 431 cases per 100,000 people. According to the results obtained, 51.9% of the clients were men. Most cases of suicide attempts were in the age group of 16-20 years, 67% were single, unemployed, and had a lower education. 60.76% of the clients lived in the city, 3.01% had a previous history of at least one suicide attempt, and 25.7% had substance abuse history. Among the methods of suicide attempts, 73.1% were reported to be taking pills, 23.9% were substance abuse, 3.8% were taking poison, 6.58% were shooting ,0.22% were hanging, and 0.4% were self-immolation.
Conclusion: The prevalence of suicide attempts in Yasuj is higher than the general population of the country. In this context Methods to promote mental health and resilience are effective in reducing suicide attempts.
